The 4 materials that matter most in a kids bed
Not all children’s beds are created equal. Here’s a breakdown of the primary materials used in quality kids furniture — what they are, why they matter, and how Aesthetik Kids uses each one.
Material 1
European Beech Wood
The structural backbone of every Aesthetik Kids bed. Solid European imported beech wood is one of the hardest, most durable hardwoods available — chosen specifically for children’s furniture because it holds its strength over decades of use.
- Exceptionally hard and impact-resistant
- Kiln-dried to remove moisture and prevent warping
- Naturally smooth grain — no splinters
- Beautiful warm finish that ages gracefully
- Sustainable and widely certified
Material 2
Solid Pine Wood
Solid pine is used alongside beech wood in many Aesthetik Kids beds for structural components, plywood bases and frame elements. A time-tested furniture wood that is lightweight yet strong, easy to work with precision, and holds fixings securely.
- Lightweight strength — easy to assemble
- Holds screws and fixings firmly over time
- Lab-certified to meet Australian safety standards
- Pairs perfectly with beech for structural integrity
- Clean, consistent grain
Material 3
Boucle Fabric
Boucle is the premium upholstery fabric used on the headboards of our Bear Bed, Koala Bed, Teddy Bear Bed and others. Its looped yarn structure creates a soft, textured surface that is both visually beautiful and genuinely functional for children’s furniture.
- Super soft — safe for sensitive skin
- Temperature-regulating due to looped structure
- Durable — stands up to years of daily contact
- Visually warm and design-forward
- Available in neutral tones that suit any room

Material 4
Leathaire
Leathaire is a premium synthetic material used to line beds like the Miffy Bed, Windmill Valley Bed and others. It looks and feels like leather, but is specifically engineered for breathability, easy cleaning and child-safe use.
- Maximum breathability — no overheating
- Wipes completely clean — crayon, food, spills
- Soft padded surface — protects little heads
- Resists moisture and everyday messes
- Durable — maintains appearance over years
Why European beech wood is the gold standard for kids beds
Not all timber used in children’s furniture is equal. Many budget beds use medium-density fibreboard (MDF), particleboard, or low-grade softwoods held together with heavy adhesives. These materials are cheaper to produce — but they carry real risks for children.
Aesthetik Kids uses solid European imported beech wood — a premium hardwood that requires no VOC-emitting adhesives for its structural integrity. Every piece is kiln-dried before construction, which removes excess moisture, prevents warping over time, and eliminates the mould and bacteria that can develop in improperly seasoned timber.
Bear Bed & Koala Bed
Both crafted from solid European imported beech wood with a boucle fabric upholstered headboard. The 100% solid wood slat mattress platform provides even support across the entire sleeping surface — no sagging, no weak points.
- Solid beech wood frame — kiln-dried
- Boucle headboard — soft, temperature-regulating
- 100% solid wood slat platform
- Lab-certified for indoor air quality
- Meets & exceeds Australian safety standards
Boucle fabric: why it’s the right choice for a headboard
Boucle — pronounced “boo-klay” — is a fabric woven from looped yarns that create a distinctive textured, slightly bumpy surface. It’s been a staple of high-end adult interior design for years, and it translates beautifully into children’s furniture for several reasons that go beyond how it looks.
The looped structure of boucle fabric creates natural air pockets within the weave. This gives it an inherent temperature-regulating property — it absorbs warmth when the room is cool and releases it when it gets warmer, helping to maintain a comfortable microclimate around the headboard area where children’s heads and faces are closest to the fabric.
Leathaire: the practical parent’s material
If you have children, you know that beds are not clean environments. Leathaire was chosen by Aesthetik Kids specifically because it acknowledges this reality without compromising on aesthetics or safety.
Unlike genuine leather (which can crack, fade and require specialist cleaning) or fabric (which absorbs stains and can be difficult to fully clean), leathaire offers the soft, premium look of leather with a surface that wipes clean with warm water and a cloth. That includes crayon marks — as more than one Aesthetik Kids customer has gratefully confirmed.
“The bed is made with an imitation leather material which has proved easy to clean already — we had an incident with crayons over Christmas.” — Aesthetik Kids customer, Windmill Valley Bed review
Leathaire is also fully breathable, which matters for children who sleep in contact with their headboard. It doesn’t trap heat the way genuine leather can, and it maintains its shape and appearance over years of daily use.
Miffy Bed
The iconic Miffy Bed is lined in Leathaire — the breathable, easy-clean material that parents love almost as much as children love the bunny headboard. Crafted from solid pine wood and high-quality plywood, with a soft padded headboard that protects little heads.
- Leathaire lining — breathable, wipes clean in seconds
- Solid pine wood + high-quality plywood base
- Soft padded headboard — child-safe design
- 100% solid wood slat mattress platform
- Kiln-dried and lab-certified
The part most parents forget: the mattress platform
The headboard is what you see. The mattress platform is what your child sleeps on every night for a decade. Yet it’s the most overlooked component when parents are choosing a bed.
A poor-quality mattress platform — thin slats, wide gaps, cheap ply — will flex under weight, create uneven support across the mattress, and degrade over time. This affects not just the mattress lifespan but, more importantly, the quality of your child’s sleep and the alignment of their developing spine.
❌ CHEAP PLATFORM
Wide gaps · Thin slats · Flexes under weight
Poor support · Shortens mattress life
✓ AESTHETIK KIDS PLATFORM
100% solid wood slats · Close-spaced · No flex
Even support · Protects mattress & spine
Every Aesthetik Kids bed features a mattress platform made from 100% solid wood slats. Not ply, not MDF, not a mix — solid wood throughout. The slats are spaced to provide even support across the entire sleeping surface, preventing the mattress from dipping or sagging.
Kiln-dried and lab-certified: what it actually means
These two terms appear on every Aesthetik Kids product page — and they’re more than marketing language. Here’s what they mean in practice:
Kiln-dried
Fresh-cut timber contains significant moisture — sometimes 50% or more of its weight. If furniture is built from insufficiently dried timber, that moisture evaporates slowly over time, causing the wood to shrink, crack and warp. Kiln drying involves placing timber in a controlled-temperature kiln until the moisture content reaches the optimal level for furniture construction (typically 6–8%). The result is timber that is dimensionally stable, structurally stronger, and resistant to the warping and cracking that plague furniture made from improperly dried wood.
Lab-certified for indoor air quality
All Aesthetik Kids furniture is independently lab-tested and certified to contribute to healthier indoor air quality, meeting or exceeding Australian safety standards. This certification confirms that the materials used — the timber, the adhesives, the fabric treatments, the finishes — do not off-gas VOCs at levels that would affect air quality in the room where the furniture is placed.
For children, who spend more time in their bedroom than anywhere else and whose respiratory systems are still developing, this isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s essential.
