How to Prevent Mould on Kids’ Furniture (And Keep Their Room Fresh All Year)

How to Prevent Mould on Kids’ Furniture (And Keep Their Room Fresh All Year)

A practical, Melbourne-parent-tested guide to stopping mould before it starts — and keeping your child’s bedroom easy to clean.

Melbourne’s damp winters and humid summers make kids’ bedrooms one of the easiest rooms in the house for mould to take hold — especially around beds, wardrobes and storage furniture pushed flush against outside walls. The good news: mould on furniture is almost always preventable with a few simple habits, the right materials, and a bit of airflow.

Why does mould grow on kids’ bedroom furniture?

Mould needs three things to grow: moisture, poor airflow, and an organic surface to feed on. Kids’ rooms tick all three boxes more often than you’d think — damp towels left on a bed frame, a wardrobe pushed tight against an external wall, condensation on a cold window overnight, or a mattress sitting directly on a solid base with no ventilation gap. Particleboard and MDF furniture are especially vulnerable because they absorb moisture and swell, giving mould spores a soft surface to colonise. Solid timber, by contrast, breathes and dries out far more readily.

How do I stop mould growing on my child’s bed or wardrobe?

  • Leave a gap from the wall. Pull beds and wardrobes at least 5–10cm away from external walls so air can circulate behind them.
  • Ventilate the mattress base. Slatted bases (like our storage beds) allow airflow underneath — solid, sealed bases trap moisture.
  • Air the room daily. Open windows for 10–15 minutes each morning, even in winter, to let overnight condensation escape.
  • Wipe condensation immediately. Check window sills and nearby furniture surfaces after cold nights.
  • Keep humidity below 60%. A small hygrometer (under $15) is an easy way to monitor this.
  • Dry wet items before storing. Damp swimwear, towels or clothes should never go straight into a wardrobe or drawer.

What’s the best way to clean solid timber kids’ furniture?

Solid timber furniture is naturally mould-resistant, but it still needs light maintenance:

  • Dust weekly with a dry or barely-damp microfibre cloth — never soaking wet.
  • Avoid harsh chemical cleaners; a mix of mild soap and water is enough for timber.
  • Dry any spills immediately, especially around bed frames and bookcases.
  • Once or twice a year, apply a food-safe timber conditioning oil to keep the wood sealed against moisture.

This is one reason we build our pieces — like the Cozy Cloud Storage Bed, Forest Teepee Bed and Tree 360° Rotating Bookcase — from solid timber rather than particleboard or MDF: it holds up far better against Melbourne’s humidity swings and won’t swell, warp or harbour mould the way pressed-wood furniture can.

How often should I clean a kid’s bedroom to prevent mould?

Frequency Task
Daily Open window 10–15 mins, make the bed to air out sheets
Weekly Dust furniture, vacuum floor/rugs, wipe window sills
Monthly Pull furniture from the wall and check behind/underneath for damp spots
Seasonally Timber conditioning, wash all bedding and soft toys on a hot cycle, check mattress underside

Does timber furniture resist mould better than MDF or particleboard?

Yes. MDF and particleboard are made from compressed wood fibres and glue, which absorb and hold moisture rather than releasing it — this makes them far more prone to swelling, delamination and mould growth over time. Solid timber has natural porosity that allows moisture to pass through and evaporate rather than get trapped, which is why it’s the standard we build all Aesthetik Kids furniture with, alongside Australian safety certification for indoor air quality.

FAQs

Can I use bleach on my child’s timber furniture?
No — bleach can damage timber sealant and isn’t necessary. Mild soap and water, dried thoroughly, is safer and just as effective.

Is a small amount of mould on furniture dangerous for kids?
Mould exposure can trigger allergies or respiratory irritation in some children, so it’s best treated and the moisture source addressed as soon as it appears, rather than left.

Do storage beds trap more moisture than regular beds?
Not if they’re well-ventilated. Look for storage beds with slatted or gapped compartments rather than fully sealed drawers pushed against the wall.
