How to Clean and Care for Your Child’s Bed Frame

Kids and mess go hand in hand. Whether it’s sticky fingers on the headboard, juice spills on the slats, or mystery scuffs that appeared overnight — a children’s bed frame takes a lot of wear. The good news? With the right approach, keeping it clean is easier than you’d think.

This guide covers everything you need to know to clean and maintain your child’s bed frame — so it stays looking great for years, not just months.

What Most Kids’ Bed Frames Are Made Of

Before you grab any cleaning product, it helps to know what you’re working with. Most children’s bed frames fall into one of these categories:

  • Solid timber — durable and beautiful, but can be damaged by excess moisture or harsh chemicals
  • MDF or engineered wood with a painted or lacquered finish — easy to wipe down, but abrasive cleaners can dull the surface
  • Timber veneer — similar care to solid timber; avoid soaking

At Aesthetik Kids, our bed frames are crafted with quality materials and finishes designed to last. When in doubt about your specific bed, less is always more — a gentle clean goes a long way.

What You’ll Need

You don’t need any special products — most of what you need is already in your home:

  • Soft microfibre cloths (at least two — one damp, one dry)
  • Mild dish soap or gentle all-purpose cleaner
  • Warm water
  • A soft-bristle toothbrush or paintbrush (for grooves and carvings)
  • Beeswax or furniture polish (for timber frames, occasional use)

Avoid: bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, abrasive sponges, and excessive water. These can damage the finish or cause the wood to warp over time.

How to Clean a Timber or Painted Bed Frame

Step 1: Strip the bed completely

Remove all bedding, pillows, and mattress. This is also a good time to vacuum the mattress and rotate it if needed — something worth doing every 3 months.

Step 2: Dry dust first

Use a dry microfibre cloth to wipe down the entire frame — headboard, footboard, side rails, and slats. This removes loose dust and debris before you introduce any moisture.

Step 3: Wipe down with a damp cloth

Mix a small amount of mild dish soap into warm water. Dampen your cloth — it should be barely wet, not dripping — and wipe down all surfaces using long, even strokes in the direction of the wood grain. Rinse the cloth and go over again with clean water to remove any soap residue.

Step 4: Dry immediately

Use a dry cloth to remove any remaining moisture straight away. Never leave a timber frame wet — even briefly — as this can cause swelling, warping, or water marks.

Step 5: Clean the details

For carved details, grooves, or decorative elements — like those on the Miffy Bed or Crocodile Bed — use a soft dry toothbrush or paintbrush to gently dislodge dust from hard-to-reach areas. Follow with a barely-damp cloth.

Dealing with Common Stains and Marks

Sticky residue (stickers, food, tape)

Dampen a cloth with warm soapy water and hold it against the residue for 30–60 seconds to soften it. Gently rub in the direction of the grain. For stubborn spots, a small amount of white vinegar diluted in water can help — but test on an inconspicuous area first.

Crayon or pencil marks

A small dab of non-gel white toothpaste on a soft cloth can work wonders on crayon marks. Rub gently, then wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry immediately.

Scuffs on painted frames

For light scuffs on painted or lacquered finishes, a Magic Eraser (melamine foam) used very lightly can buff them out — but use with caution as it is mildly abrasive. Always test on a hidden spot first.

Ink or marker

Act quickly. A little isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) on a cotton ball, dabbed — not rubbed — on the stain can lift fresh ink. For dried or set marks, contact us in store and we can advise based on your specific frame finish.

How Often Should You Clean the Bed Frame?

Task How Often
Dry dust the frame Weekly (when you change the sheets)
Full wipe-down with damp cloth Monthly
Deep clean + stain treatment Every 3–6 months, or as needed
Timber polish or beeswax Once or twice a year (solid timber only)
Check & tighten bolts/screws Every 6 months

Bonus: Keeping the Mattress Fresh Too

While you’re at it, a clean bed frame deserves a clean mattress. Here’s a quick routine:

  • Vacuum the mattress every time you change the sheets to remove dust mites and crumbs
  • Spot clean spills immediately with a damp cloth and a tiny bit of mild detergent — never soak the mattress
  • Use a mattress protector — it’s the single best thing you can do to extend the life of a kids’ mattress
  • Air it out by leaving it uncovered for an hour when you change the sheets
  • Rotate it every 3 months to prevent uneven wear

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a disinfectant spray on my child’s bed frame?

Most disinfectant sprays are too harsh for timber and painted finishes and can strip the surface over time. If you need to sanitise after illness, use a very diluted solution of white vinegar and water, or a baby-safe surface spray, and dry the frame thoroughly straight after.

How do I remove the smell from a timber bed frame?

A light wipe-down with a cloth dampened with white vinegar (diluted 1:1 with water) can neutralise odours naturally. Let the frame air dry completely in a well-ventilated room. Avoid using scented sprays directly on the timber as these can build up over time.

My child’s bed frame has a few scratches — can I fix them?

Minor scratches on timber frames can often be minimised with a matching timber touch-up marker or a little beeswax rubbed in with a soft cloth. For painted frames, a small pot of matching touch-up paint is your best friend. Come visit us at the Burwood showroom and we can point you in the right direction based on your specific bed.

How do I know if my bed frame needs to be replaced?

Signs it’s time for a new frame include: visible structural damage or cracking, joints that won’t stay tight despite regular tightening, slats that keep slipping or breaking, or a frame that creaks and moves under normal use. A well-maintained quality bed frame should last many years — and all of our beds at Aesthetik Kids are built with longevity in mind.
