Bunk Bed Safety: What Every Australian Parent Needs to Know
Bunk beds are brilliant for saving space — but only when they meet the right safety standards. Here’s your complete guide.
Bunk beds are one of the most popular choices for Australian families with multiple kids or smaller bedrooms. But with great fun comes great responsibility. Every year, children are injured in preventable bunk bed accidents. This guide covers everything you need to know to keep your kids safe.
👶
Age rule: top bunk is for 6+ only
Children under 6 should never sleep on the top bunk. Their coordination and spatial awareness aren’t developed enough to safely navigate ladders and guardrails at night.
🛡️
Guardrails on both sides
The top bunk must have guardrails on all sides — not just one. The gap between guardrail and mattress must be less than 95mm to prevent entrapment.
📏
Ceiling clearance matters
There should be at least 75cm of clearance between the top mattress surface and the ceiling. This prevents head injuries when a child sits up suddenly.
🪜
Ladder grip and placement
The ladder should be firmly attached with non-slip rungs. Teach kids to always face the ladder when climbing — never climb down facing outward.
🔩
Check bolts every 3 months
Bolts and connections loosen with use. Do a quarterly check of all joints. A wobbly bunk is an unsafe bunk — tighten immediately or stop use.
💡
Mattress fit is critical
The mattress must fit snugly with no gaps at the sides or ends. A gap larger than 30mm between mattress and frame is a serious entrapment hazard.
Never do these things with a bunk bed
- Allow jumping or roughhousing on the top bunk
- Hang ropes, cords, or clothing from the frame (strangulation risk)
- Let children under 6 sleep on the top bunk unsupervised
- Use a mattress that is too thin (under 100mm) — it reduces guardrail effectiveness
- Place the bunk near a ceiling fan, light fitting, or window blind cords
- Ignore squeaking or wobbling — inspect and fix immediately
| Age | Recommended Bed | Key Safety Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Under 2 | Cot with fixed sides | Locked drop-side, firm mattress |
| 2–5 years | Toddler bed or low single | Bed rails, low height |
| 6–10 years | Bottom bunk or single | Sturdy frame, correct mattress size |
| 6+ years | Top bunk (with supervision) | Full guardrails, safe ladder |
| 8+ years | Loft or mid-sleeper | Full safety rails, ladder grip |
